Get to Know Us!
Thank you so much for your interest in Aiming High Homeschool Co-op.
Who are we? This coop began last year with around 15 families and 50 kids. We were very blessed to meet at a church in Toano, and quickly outgrew the space. The coming 2022-23 school-year will be the coop's first year at the location of Smith Memorial Baptist Church. There has been a lot of prayer put into this group to get it started and now to switch places. We are honored that you are interested in Aiming High for your upcoming school year. The Lord is doing mighty things. We love to see Him work in hearts each week.
Last year about half of our members were from Williamsburg and the other half were new to the area. A few families were new to homeschooling and a few had homeschooled for many years. Members of the group are from different churches around town. Some are new to their faith and some have followed Jesus for a long time. We are all different. And we are not perfect. But the core remains the same: families who love Jesus, want to see others come to Christ, and learning to be more Christlike every day. Sharing in the journey of schooling our kiddos.
What type of homeschool co-op is Aiming High? Aiming High is a traditional coop, meaning that Moms (or Dads, whoever brings the kids each week) volunteer two hours and attend support group the third hour. Some moms do not enjoy teaching, so there are a few spots such as nursery, preschool, support group, classroom assistant, or floater (substitute). We want Mamas to be comfortable and enjoy attending every week! But we also desperately need teachers for our kids, too. So if God has given you a passion for something (sewing, math, geography, anything!), then please consider suggesting that as a class you can teach.
What does each Monday look like? We will begin our Monday's as a big group in the sanctuary promptly at 9:00am with devotion, prayer, and announcements. The Nursery and Preschool parents/teachers are dismissed first. We then call the Group Teachers and Group Assistants (for Kinder, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade) to the front to begin lining up their students. Once they leave the room, the 4th grade and older are dismissed to walk to their classes. The K-3rd grade children are never alone during the day. They have an assistant with their class all day that walks them to their class, walks them to the bathroom, etc. Everyone will be wearing name tags with their schedule written on it. Smith Memorial is a big campus with two different buildings. Safety is a key priority for us, our students, and the church. We will know where every person is located at any point of the day.
The 4th grade and above will have a list of classes from which to choose. This website will continually be updated with the class choices as families register and commit to a subject to teach.
At the final bell of the day, the Group kids and Preschool will be brought to the gym to be picked up. Moms will need to pick up ages 0-1 at the nursery.
We then have the option to stay outside for lunch after dismissal. My kids usually like to stay and play for a couple of hours.
This is the logistics of how each Monday works. It's a busy day, but so fulfilling. I remember the years and years of being a Mama to many little kids, and I can contribute my survival to the coop support group every week. Just a few minutes to sit down without kids, drink coffee, eat a snack, pray, grow closer to Christ, and share my heart with other moms.
What about the High School Credit Classes? Aiming High will have options for high schoolers this year. There will be a cost per class. Details will be a little different from all the info above, mainly regarding price. We will have more information soon.
When Do We Register? How do I get more info? Registration is Open! Please email us any specific questions at [email protected] The Member Registration (as well as the Class Registration) is done online. The cost is $150 per family. This is a non-refundable annual membership fee. There is no other cost for classes unless you are a high schooler anc choose the paid classes.
Thanks again for your interest in the coop.
